This work is a novel of adventure and travel. The story begins in 1864, when a certain Lord and Lady Glenarvan fished for a shark during an excursion off the coast of Glasgow, aboard their yacht the Duncan. Inside the huge fish, they discover a bottle with a message in three languages, which indicates the coordinates of the castaways of the Britannia. An expedition was then quickly set up to come to the aid of the survivors, including Captain Grant. The latter's children are part of the trip, which will take the crew of the Duncan to South America, Australia and New Zealand.
